Tamahome as a Suzaku Warrior

The champion of them all

Not just a greedy guy, Tamahome is also the champion of the Suzaku Celestial Warriors. From all the seven celestial warrior, Tamahome's power if the most strongest and important to the Suzaku deity. Since Suzaku's power comes from love, Tamahome's strong desire to protect the person he loves is the reason that his existence is important to Suzaku. Tamahome is also the person who fought against evil Nakago, the champion of the god Seriyu, who was planning on destroying not only the world of the book, but also the real world.

Before we continue about Tamahome's destiny as a warrior, let us have a little summary about how a maiden is taken inside the book. It is said that ones a country is in grave danger, a maiden from another world will show up to save the country. In Suzaku's case, Seriyu's plans to conquer Hong-nan was the reason Miaka showed up. In Genbu's case, a great snow storm is about to damage the land of Genbu that will kill most of its people. Seriyu in the other hand, Nakago is the reason why Quo-dong will perish. Because Nakago is planning on taking his vengence in his own country. Biakko's story is still unknown. Well then let us go back to Tamahome.

Before meeting Miaka, Tamahome studied martial arts with one of the Byakko celestial warriors, Tokaki. When Tamahome was small, he was always being teased and was called "ghost boy" by every kids in his neighborhood because of the sign on his forehead. The kanji for Tama means demon or ghost. Tokaki decided to teach Tamahome how to fight and stand by himself, since young Tamahome will soon protect the Maiden of Suzaku. At first Tamahome wasn't really serious about becoming a powerful Suzaku Celestial Warrior. He was just right beside Miaka and went along with the scenarios. His first move as the Suzaku Warrior showed when Miaka accidentally got trapped under a huge pile of rock. He was on top of Miaka carrying all the weight on his back to make sure that Miaka can breathe and that she won't be in pain. When they were saved by Nuriko, Miaka told Tamahome that he would have been died, but Tamahome answered in a friendly tone and said:

I'm only doing what I feel like doing, and eventually I am going to expect some expensive thank yous.

- Tamahome, Fushigi Yuugi volume 1

Since Tamahome's only power is martial arts and strength, he grew stronger and received a powerful ability to using his chi as a fire ball. It is a power that Tai-Yi-Jun gave before the Genbu arc in the story. It's kind of lame that Tamahome doesn't have a cool power unlike the Genbu Warriors, but it kind of makes him more powerful with his strong feelings and courage.
